In Ahmedabad, a Police Commissioner order says you must not let a house, office, shop or godown without informing the local police station. Give the station your details, the rent, and the tenant's name, address, photo and ID. The current order runs to 6 November 2026. Gujarat Police also take tenant registrations online.

What the Ahmedabad order says

The Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad City issued the order on 7 September 2026 under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS). It is in Gujarati. It cites intelligence reports that criminals and terrorists may take shelter in rented homes in residential areas, especially around festivals such as Ganesh Utsav, Navratri and Dussehra.

It is renewed every 60 days

An order under section 163 lasts a limited time, so the Commissioner reissues it. The notifications and orders list shows a house tenant order for one 60-day period after another since at least January 2024. Treat the rule as standing in Ahmedabad, and check the list for the order in force on the day you let.

Details to give the police station

The order sets out six columns of information to give the police station for the property's area:

Columns in the Ahmedabad order, translated
ColumnWhat to fill in
1Serial number
2The owner's name, and the let property: which area it is in, and its built-up area in square metres
3The name of the person who has authority to let the property, if not the owner
4When the property was let, and the monthly rent
5The tenants' full names and addresses, with a photo, and a passport, driving licence or PAN card attached as proof
6The name and address of the person who introduced the tenant to the owner, such as a broker, with their passport, driving licence or PAN card as proof

Column 6 is easy to miss. If a broker or a friend found you the tenant, the police want their details and ID too, so ask for a copy before you sign.

Register the tenant online with Gujarat Police

The Ahmedabad Commissioner's website links its tenant and domestic help registration form to the Gujarat Police citizen portal, run by the state Home Department. Tenant Registration is one of the portal's services. Its user guideline explains the steps:

  1. Create an account

Click Login/Registration. Choose a username, password and security question, then enter your name, date of birth, address, mobile number and email. Upload your ID proof and type its number.

  2. Open Tenant Registration

Sign in and click Tenant Registration on the home page. Every service except downloading an FIR copy needs an account.

  3. Fill in the four parts

The form asks for the property owner's details, the tenant's details, the tenant's address, and a declaration. Fields marked with a star are mandatory.

  4. Track it

My Request List in your account shows the status of the request and the steps the police station has taken on it.

The guideline does not list the exact fields or uploads. Have the column 5 and 6 details from the Ahmedabad order ready anyway, so you have what the station wants whichever route you use.

Fee, timing and what is not confirmed

  • Fee. Neither the order, the portal nor its guideline mentions one.
  • When to inform the police. The order says you may not let without informing the station, so do it before the tenant moves in.
  • Whether online registration satisfies the order. The Commissioner's site points owners to the portal, but the order itself only names the police station. Keep the portal's request number, and if in doubt, also hand the details to the station and ask for an acknowledgement.
  • Other Gujarat cities. We read only the Ahmedabad order. Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot have their own Police Commissioners, so ask your local station what applies there.

Shops, offices and PGs in Ahmedabad

The order is not only about homes. It covers industrial units, offices, shops, godowns and cold storage as well, so commercial landlords are included. For a PG, report each occupant as a tenant when they move in, and keep a written PG rental agreement with each one. Our rent agreement format includes a clause in which the tenant agrees to give ID for police verification.

Stamp duty on a Gujarat rent agreement

We have not published a Gujarat stamp duty page yet. For how stamp duty on a rent agreement works and the states we have confirmed from official sources, see stamp duty on rent agreements. For other states' police rules, see the tenant police verification guide.

Keep the tenant's papers with the rent

KYC, lease and receipts in one place

Domvio does not inform the police for you. It keeps each tenant's lease and KYC documents beside their rent history, and sends a PDF receipt on WhatsApp for every payment. See the rent collection app.
