Reporting a tenant to the police anywhere in Karnataka
By Giridhar Reddy, founder of Domvio, Bengaluru
Updated
Karnataka has no official online tenant verification service as of October 2026: Seva Sindhu's list of police services and the KSP citizen portal both leave tenants out. Wherever your property is, in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru or a district town, you hand a tenant information form to the police station covering it, and keep the stamped acknowledgement.
Can you verify a tenant online in Karnataka?
Not through any official channel we could find. Karnataka State Police publish the 20 police services available online through Seva Sindhu. That list, last updated on 19 May 2026, includes certificates for domestic workers, for staff of institutions and companies, and for marriage alliances. Tenant verification is not on it.
The KSP citizen portal has no tenant option either. Some private websites describe an online tenant service for Karnataka. We could not trace one to a police or state government page, so do not upload a tenant's ID to a site that is not run by the police.
Check again before you go
Police services move online without much notice. Look at the Seva Sindhu list linked above before you visit the station; if a tenant service has been added, use it.
Which police force covers your property?
Karnataka's larger cities have their own city police, separate from the district police around them. The KSP map of police units lists these city units. In every other town and village, the district police are in charge. Either way, the form goes to the station for the property's address, not the one near your own home.
| Where the property is | Police unit | How to find the station |
|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | Bengaluru City Police | Bengaluru City Police website or the KSP station search |
| Mysuru | Mysuru City police | KSP station search |
| Mangaluru | Mangaluru City police | KSP station search |
| Hubballi and Dharwad | Hubballi-Dharwad City police | KSP station search |
| Belagavi | Belagavi City police | KSP station search |
| Kalaburagi | Kalaburagi City police | KSP station search |
| Anywhere else | That district's police | KSP station search |
The KSP police station search lets you pick a district or city unit and then a station, and shows that station's address, phone number and email. Call before you go to ask what they need.
Steps to report a tenant at the station
Look up the station
Use the station search above, or ask at the nearest station which one covers your street.
Phone the station first
Ask whether they take tenant details, which form they use, how many copies to bring and whether any fee applies. Stations in different cities, and sometimes in the same city, use different formats.
Collect papers from the tenant before handover
Get copies of the tenant's ID and permanent address proof, and photos, while you still hold the keys. Ask for the same from every adult moving in.
Fill the station's form with the tenant
Complete it together so the details match the tenant's documents. Sign where the form asks you to, and have the tenant sign if there is space for it.
Hand it in and get a stamped copy
Ask the officer to stamp and date your copy. That copy is your only proof that you told the police, so file it with the rent agreement.
If you live outside Karnataka or abroad, ask the station on the phone whether a relative or caretaker can submit on your behalf, and what letter they need from you. We could not find an official Karnataka rule on this.
What the form asks for, and what we could not confirm
No official Karnataka police website we checked publishes a tenant information form, so we cannot list its fields with certainty. Stations print their own. Until you see the station's form, a sensible set to have ready is:
- Your name, phone number, ID and the address of the rented home.
- The tenant's name, parent's or spouse's name, phone number and date of birth.
- The tenant's permanent address and the address they are moving from.
- Where the tenant works or studies.
- Names of everyone else who will live there.
- Copies of the tenant's photo ID and recent passport-size photos.
If the station's form asks for something not on this list, fill it in as asked. Their form is the one that counts.
Fee and how long it takes
Karnataka State Police do not publish a fee or a processing time for tenant information, because there is no listed service to attach one to. Ask the station when you phone. If they ask for money, ask for a receipt. Submit the form on or before the day the tenant moves in, so the acknowledgement date shows you acted promptly.
The other paperwork for a Karnataka tenancy
- Stamp duty on the agreement. For a residential agreement of up to a year, Karnataka charges 0.5%, capped at ₹500. See stamp duty on a rent agreement in Karnataka for the rate and a calculator.
- Deposit. Our guide to security deposit rules in Bangalore covers how many months is usual and what you can deduct.
- The agreement itself. Add a clause that the tenant will share ID for police verification. Our rent agreement format has one, and the PG rental agreement covers single beds.
Keep the tenant's KYC in one place
File the KYC with the lease and the rent
Domvio keeps each tenant's lease and KYC documents together with their rent history and PDF receipts. It does not submit anything to the police; you do that at the station. For rent itself, see the rent collection app.

At the station of the city police unit that covers the property. The Karnataka State Police station search lists every station with its address and phone number.
